Week 1 Writing

The coach of my group pushed the raft into the rushing white water. “Alright guys hop in”, the leader Frank said. Me and my 4 friends jumped in the bright yellow raft and picked up the 5 paddles for us. “Okay guys so hold the paddle like this”, he showed us. He then proceeded to show us how to paddle and what to do if someone fell out. “Can we just go”, Janette whined. “Alright guys get ready”.

He pushed us from the bank and into the white water. It dragged us with it. “Okay so guys you don’t have to paddle as much because well”, Frank pointed to the water viciously taking us. “But now”, as the fierce current subsided and disappeared to a slow field of dark looking water. “We paddle!”. He shoved the paddle into the water, it looked like the paddle was a part of his arm as he pushed it through the water. We all followed in sync. It was tiring but I really liked it.

“Okay guys get ready this bit is pretty hard”, We all held our paddle tight and got mentally prepared. “Whoah”, the whole raft shook as we hit a rock. All of a sudden we were playing Bumper karts and we were hitting rocks left, right and centre. Splash! We went down a massive rock/waterfall. We all got splashed and Soph nearly fell out! “You guys alright?”, Frank said as we got to quieter waters. “YES”, we all replied. “I wanna do it again”, Charlotte said excitedly. “Yeah, same!”Amelia agreed. We all were cold but so pumped and joyful. “Woaho”, Suddenly Janette fell in.

“Agh! Help me!!!”, she screamed. We reached out for paddles but she was already too far. Frank fumbled around in a bag. He pulled out a life saver and chucked it over to Janette. Thankfully she caught it and hugged it like her life depended on it. Frank pulled her in and she climbed in shivering. “That was so scary”, she whimpered. “I thought I was gonna die!”. “You weren’t gonna die”, Charlotte said. We all recovered from Janette’s accident by having hot chocolate and marshmallows. Waiting for the river got furious again. “Ok guys in a few minutes we’re gonna go down a bit of a waterfall and then we will finish at a bridge”. “AWWW!”, I said, “Are we finishing soon?”. “Yes I’m sorry girls”, Frank said apologetically. “Alright guys get ready!”.

The current started to pick up rapidly and the smooth waters turned into fast flowing whiteness. “HOLD ON!” Frank cried. Splash! We went right off the side of a boulder and landed right under a waterfall. All of us got sprayed with ice cold water and got saturated. We all started to laugh and it was so funny! All of a sudden we saw the bridge. And all of us went into depression. We didn’t want it to end. It was so fun! We paddle to the river bank and pulled the raft onto the sand and mud. “Did you like that girls?” Frank asked. “YES!”, we all screamed. “Do you wanna do it again?”, “YES!!”, we screamed even louder this time. “Ok lets do it again!”.

Term 3 Writing

“Wake up!”, My brother was screaming at me. He slapped me across the face. “Ow”, I cried, as I lunged out of bed and punched him. “What was that for?”. “THE SANDSTORM HERE!”, he yelled and then went quiet. I could hear it now, vicious wind slapped the mud walls of our home. Sand was burying our feet already and distant screams could be heard. “Where’s mum?”, I said worriedly. “Thats the thing, I can’t find her!”, “What I turned to him as we were making our way to the door. “Yeah she disappeared”, “Oh no”, I said.

The sand was even higher near the door. Me, who was shorter than my brother, was up to my knees. “OW my eyes”, Jacob said as sand from the storm went straight into his eyes. His brown mop flowing everywhere. He pulled me back into the safety of the house.  “We need something for our eyes”, he said, his warm brown eyes blinking rapidly. “What about a sheet?”, I suggested, “We could hold it over our eyes and our heads?”, “Ok I guess that could work”, he said, shuffling through the sand to his bedroom. The golden grains were grown higher each minute. I pulled my fingers through the sand. It was soft and warm, but hard to walk through.

“Here”, he pulled a blanket off his bed and put it over our heads. We pulled our legs higher in the sand and Jacob had to duck through every doorway. “Ok get ready”, he said as we neared the entrance. “Whoah”, I gasped as strong winds tried to pull me away. We trudged through the storm a few sands got through our fortress but it was nothing compared to out there. From time to time we would have to squint and look forward to seeing where we were going. “We need to go to the sandstorm meeting place”, I said looking at Jacob. “Where do you think we’re going?”he said, ducking his head under the sheet to see where we were going. “Ok, mister snappy”, I said.

“HELLO!”, Jacob screamed out as we got close to the meeting place. “Hello”, something whispered in the wind. “We nearly there”, he said strongly and we both trudged on even faster. “HELLO ANYONE OUT THERE”, a ruff sounding voice yelled. “Aiden!”, me and Jacob both said to each other. We stumbled until a small little semi circle poked out of the ground. There standing in the doorway was Aiden the biggest and strongest guy in the village and Arlo the old little leader. “Jacob, Izzy?, is that you”, Arlo called. “Yes!”, I screamed and we both lunged ourselves over letting go of the sheet that got ripped away from us. I burst into tears of joy. “Where’s mum”, I croaked. “She’s in the bunker with everyone else.” We ran down the stairs and there at the entrance getting comforted by other women, was mum.

“MUM!”I yelled and jumped on her. “Honeys!”, she screamed and brought both of us into a hug. “Oh my god I thought I lost”, Mum said. Squeezing us harder. “I went to see your father’s grave and suddenly the storm started. I tried to make my way to you guys but a few girls pulled me here and said that you guys would make it here”. She took another breath. “And it looks like you did!”. “You guys are now safe”. She said and kissed us both. Out of exhaustion I fell into a dreamless sleep in mum’s arms.
